If a search isn't returning what you expect, it almost always comes down to one of the four issues below. This article helps you diagnose and fix each one.
See How to Search on Envato for a full walkthrough of search features and techniques.
1. Your Search Is Scoped to One Category
Search is scoped to a single content category at a time — Photos, Music, Fonts, and so on. If the item you're after belongs to a different category, it won't show up, no matter how well your keywords match.
Fix: Set the search selector to All Categories and begin your search. Suggestions appear as you type, showing you which categories may contain the item you’re after.
For example, typing "logos" shows you Logos & Idents under Music and Logos under Graphics Templates. Select a suggestion and you'll land directly in the right category with filters already set.
2. Your Keywords Don't Match the Author's Wording
The words you type might not match how an author described their item. Envato does search for meaning, not just exact text — but wording still matters, especially for less common terms.
Fix: Try a few different terms or synonyms. If you know exactly which item or creator you're looking for, search by the author, using @username, instead of a generic keyword, or try our AI generation tools.
3. An Old Filter Is Still Active
Filters stay applied as you search within a content type, and it's easy to forget one is still switched on from an earlier search. This can narrow your results far more than intended — sometimes down to zero.
Fix: Open the Filters menu in the navigation bar and check for anything still selected from a previous search. Filters clear automatically when you switch categories, but not when you stay within the same one.
4. The Catalog Doesn't Have That Item Yet
Sometimes the issue isn't your search — it's that we don't have the specific asset you're picturing.
Fix: Try broadening your search terms to see similar alternatives. If there's something specific you need that we don't carry, let us know — catalog gaps are useful feedback for us.
Other Things to Check
Author search isn't working
Author search (@username) only works inside a specific content category — it isn't available from All Categories. Make sure you've selected a category first.
Location search isn't returning local results
Use the predefined Location filter (available in Photos and Videos) rather than typing a place name as a keyword — this ensures results were actually captured there, not just similar-looking scenes.
Music search results don't sound right
If keyword search isn't landing, try audio match instead — upload a file or paste a link to find tracks with a similar sound and feel.
Searching in another language returns odd results
Envato automatically translates non-English search terms into English. If results look off, try the equivalent English term directly, or check your language setting in Preferences.
FAQ
-
Why did my search suddenly return way fewer results?
Check whether a filter from a previous search is still active — this is the most common cause of an unexpectedly narrow result set.
-
Why can't I find an item I know exists on Envato?
It may be filed under a different category than you expect (see Key Category Differences in our search guide), or your keywords may not match the author's description. Try All Categories and a broader search term.
-
Why doesn't @author search work for me?
Author search only works inside a specific content category, not from All Categories. Select a category first, then use @username.
