Prohibited Usage of Envato Items

While the Envato Elements licence allows you to use downloaded items for a wide range of commercial and personal purposes, certain uses are not permitted. This article provides a summary of the most important prohibited uses.

1. No redistribution of items, even with modifications

Items downloaded from Envato Elements must not be redistributed — whether for free or for payment — as stock assets, in tools or templates, or as source files. You cannot redistribute an item on its own or bundled with other items, even if you have made superficial modifications to it. You cannot create derivative versions of fonts or add-ons.

Superficial modifications means changes that do not substantially transform the item's original design or purpose — for example, recolouring an icon or adjusting the proportions of a graphic.

2. No use in on-demand, made-to-order, or build-yourself applications

Items downloaded from Envato Elements cannot be used in on-demand services — for example, a website or tool where a customer customises a design (such as a t-shirt, mug, or poster) and orders a personalised end product. This applies whether the final product is digital or physical.

This means Envato Elements items cannot be offered as part of a print-on-demand service, a custom product configurator, or any similar build-your-own or made-to-order workflow.

3. No merchandising where the item itself is the main value

You cannot use a downloaded item as merchandise in cases where the item itself is the primary value of the product — for example, selling a t-shirt, poster, or mug where the Envato Elements illustration or graphic is the main reason someone would buy it.

You can use items in merchandising, provided the item is incorporated into a larger end product and/or is significantly altered so that the item itself is not the primary commercial value of the product.

4. Items incorporated into end products cannot be extracted or used separately

Items that have been incorporated into an end product must not be extractable from that end product or usable as a standalone asset. You must take all reasonable steps to prevent this — for example, by not providing layered source files or raw asset files to end clients.

You must also inform any client for whom the project is created of their responsibilities in relation to this requirement.

5. No trademark or service mark rights for items included in an end product

You cannot claim trademark or service mark rights for any item that is included in your end product. Items used in an end product must be expressly excluded from any trademark or service mark application for that product.

6. One account, one user — no sharing of account details or installed items

Your Envato Elements account is for one named individual only. You cannot share your user account details with anyone else, even within the same organization or business. Items installed (such as fonts or add-ons) can only be used by you (the subscriber). You cannot transfer the font or add-on to another user (except in the case of web fonts where different terms apply).

7. Installation of items is limited to two devices and requires an active subscription

For items that require installation — such as fonts and add-ons — you may install each item on up to two of your own devices. You must have an active Envato Elements subscription to install these items.

8. Items may only be used for lawful purposes

Items downloaded from Envato Elements may only be used for lawful purposes. Items must not be used in any material that is offensive, defamatory, pornographic, obscene, or demeaning, or that promotes discrimination.

In addition, items must not be used in a way that:

• Creates a false or fake identity
• Implies personal endorsement of a product or service by any person depicted
• Is connected with sensitive or controversial subject matter as defined in the Envato Elements Licence Terms

9. You cannot claim ownership of a downloaded item

The original author of each item retains full ownership of that item. You cannot claim ownership of a downloaded item — even if you have modified it or incorporated it into an end product.

Frequently asked questions

• Can I use Envato Elements items for print-on-demand products?

  No. Using Envato Elements items in a print-on-demand service — where customers customise and order individual products — is a prohibited use under the Envato Elements licence.

• Can I sell merchandise using Envato Elements designs?

  Only in limited circumstances. You can use Envato Elements items in merchandise if the item is incorporated into a larger end product and/or is significantly altered, and if the item itself is not the primary commercial value of the product. Using an item as the main design on a t-shirt, mug, or poster without substantial alteration is not permitted.

• Can I share my Envato Elements account with colleagues?

  No. An Individual Envato Elements subscription is for one named person only. Account details cannot be shared with others. If multiple people in your team need access, see the Envato Teams plan.

• Can I redistribute items I have modified?

  No. Items downloaded from Envato Elements cannot be redistributed — even with modifications — as stock assets, templates, tools, or source files. This applies whether redistribution is free or paid. See prohibited use 1 above.
