Canada Federal GST/HST Information for Envato Elements Subscribers
Envato Elements is now registered for GST and HST in Canada and will charge GST/HST to subscribers residing in Canada effective 4th December 2024.
What does this mean for me?
Subscribers from Canada will see a change in their recurring Envato Elements billing to include, depending on their province, either Goods & Services Tax (GST) of 5% or Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) of 13% or 15%.
Depending on your province's tax rate, your subscription may include GST or HST, which will be added to your subscription price. If we look at a Monthly plan as an example, a $33 subscription will increase to $34.65 with GST or up to $37.95 with HST. Envato Elements will pay this tax directly to the Canada Revenue Agency.
This price adjustment to include GST/HST will happen automatically based on the billing details you provided when you completed or updated your subscription details.
What do I need to do?
To comply with GST/HST rules and regulations, please make sure that your billing information is correct (find instructions on how to do this here).
If you have a Canadian sales tax ID used for business purposes, please update your billing information to include it. Please include your correct BN number in the billing details so it can be reflected on your invoice for GST/HST purposes. Changes made to the billing details will only apply from your next invoice onwards.
FAQ for subscribers located in Canada
What rate of tax is applied to the subscription?
Depending on your province, as per your billing details, GST will apply at a rate of 5%; and HST will apply at a rate of 15%, unless your province is Ontario, where HST will be applied at a rate of 13%.
What if I am registered for GST/HST in Canada?
If you are registered for GST/HST in Canada, please update your billing/tax information to record your GST/HST number (using your 9 numerical digit BN number). If you do not provide a GST/HST number, GST/HST will apply to all subsequent monthly or yearly renewals. Changes made to the billing details will only apply from your next invoice onwards.
Where to find invoices?
A record of the GST/HST that has been collected can be found on your monthly or annual invoices or can be viewed on your My Account page after 2nd December 2024. For provinces where HST is collected, your invoice will break the HST into a GST component of 5%, and the remaining as HST. Please note that the correct total rate and amount have been calculated.
At the checkout, the sales tax quoted is labeled as GST, but I reside in a HST province. What should I do?
You don’t need to do anything - as long as your billing details are correct, your invoice will reflect the HST component; and the correct total rate and amount will be calculated.
